Bertie and the Bear
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (November, 1988)
Author: Pamela Allen
Average review score:

love Pamela Allen books
My 3yo daughter loves the Pamela Allen books and this one is typical of the ones that appeal to younger readers with great illustrations, a rollicking pace and lots of funny sound effects. They sometimes read this book on one of the popular kids TV shows here in Australia so it is quite widely known here.

Learn all about Sounds!
The bear is running after Bertie and the rest of the people in the castle are trying to scare the bear away by making a lot of noise!

The Admiral with his gong, the Captain with a horn, the General with a flute and many others teach children the different kinds of sounds that are produced with different sources.

Great illustrations accompany the story and the story ends funnily and happily.

Wonderful book for kids and educators.

The Betrayal of Liliuokalani: Last Queen of Hawaii 1838-1917
Published in Paperback by Mutual Publishing (December, 1991)
Author: Helena G. Allen
Average review score:

A Hawaiian Tragedy
This is an excellent and well documented biography of Hawaii's last queen. Helena Allen tells the story of Liliuokalani and through her eyes we view the waning days of the Hawaiian monarchy and the oligarchy that would manipulate the media and congress to eventually affect the annexation of the kingdom to the US. Much of this story makes your blood boil. Yet beyond the political injustice, this is a story of a woman in conflict with her times, who manages to weather the storm with grace, dignity and aloha. It's a story that needs to be told and is a must-read for anyone interested in Hawaiian history.

Liliuokalani remains a queen
This book provides a fascinating insight to the last days of the monarchy of Hawaii as seen through the eyes of its last quuen and her hanai daughter. The book is well-documented and a must-read for anyone interested in Hawaian history.

I came away with a sense of awe that one who had been so mistreated could find forgiveness and practice aloha until her death.

The Bicycle Man

My son exclaimed "Read it again!!"
My 7 year old son loved this book! Each page reeled him in more: the sports day fun, the soldiers, the appealing black character, the bike tricks. He did not want the story to stop. It has been a long time since he asked me to re-read a book!!

A charming vignette. . .
Soon after World War II, in occupied Japan, two American soldiers (we don't learn why they're there or where they're headed) walk onto a Japanese school yard, and one of them delights the assembled students with bicycle-riding tricks. A charming vignette of the personal interaction between a pair of young men and a group of children, strangers with different languages and from different cultures, whose paths cross briefly and will never cross again. Doubly charming to me because my father, a young soldier, was there at the time, and could ride the bicycle backwards better than anyone I've ever met.

A great book for kids
I gave copies of this book to a 6 year-old and a 12 -year old. Both loved it. It is a really well-researched and cleverly put together book, a great idea done well.

Brilliant and Highly Amusing
I bought this book largely because of its gorgeous, highly reflective cover. A true whim, particularly as I do not have children. However, as soon as I started to turn this highly engaging volume's pages, I found myself riveted. Hainey is a master at fascinating minutiae. He takes a simple topic--the color blue--and relates it to myriad topics ranging from animals to music to history. Kids will devour it. And this adult loves it.

Booz Allen Hamilton

The real deal
I read this guide and felt encouraged that my initial thoughts of applying at Booz were on target. It's where I want to be, and I got that after going through all of the research and analysis poured into this guide. I even passed it by a friend who's worked at Booz, and he confirmed that it's solid stuff. Thanks for the advice and for doing all the legwork for me. I'm ready to go in there and wow them with my "insider" knowledge of the company. I've also bought your Ace Your Case series and feel like i can take on any case they throw at me during the interviews.

Great for interview preparation
I was really suprised at how thorough this guide turned out to be. It allowed me to really target where I could fit in with the company and give intelligent responses during the interview. I would strongly recommend this guide to anyone preparing to interview at Booz Allen.

The Buddha: His Life Retold
Published in Paperback by Paragon House (May, 1991)
Author: Robert Allen Mitchell
Average review score:

A modern script about Buddha's life
This is a history written with a great sensitivity, based on ancient texts, but told as a modern script (almost a hollywood script). I can't imagine a buddha nearer to us. Only a question: ¿When the movie? (Excuse my english)

Worth the Read for Buddhists and Non-Buddhists Alike
I highly recommend this book to anyone beginning to study the Buddha's life or to the merely curious. Mr. Mitchell's portrayl of the Buddha is one of the most vibrant and real I have ever encountered; and I have read many books on the subject. While not highly scholarly it brings this most compassionate of humanity's teachers to life right before your eyes. It has wide range in that it covers the scope of Siddharta Gautama's life. From the miraculous stories of his birth to his 45 year ministry. I highly recommend this book to Buddhists and Non-Buddhists alike.

Burden of a Secret: A Story of Truth and Mercy in the Face of AIDS
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (May, 1997)
Author: Jimmy Raymond Allen
Average review score:

One of the most powerful books I've ever read.
Rev. Allen shows each of us that forgiveness is possible with the help of God and our faith. This is an incredible story of a courageous family through one of the largest cruelties of life. The author also share his vision as to what church and Christianity is really about and how to aspire a more Christian heart toward humanity.

a moving story of real life
Few books reveal the soul of a family faced with aids like this one. I highly recommend it to those trying to understand this facit of American society today.

The Butterflies of West Virginia and Their Caterpillars (Pitt Series in Nature and Natural History)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (October, 1997)
Author: Thomas J. Allen
Average review score:

great resource
I use this as a companion to my Butterflies through Binoculars book. The great thing about this book is the caterpillars that it shows. I'm consantly finding caterpillars in our garden and wonder what they'll turn into. This book helps sort all that out. The pictures are really good as well

The best butterfly field guide I have seen.
I had purchased three other butterfly field guides prior to this one and this is the best in terms of help in identifying species seen in the field. Based on my experience, the butterfly photographs displayed in this book do the best job I have seen of accurately portraying species as they appear in the field. Photographs of like species are lumped together on the color plates and both upperwing and undersides are displayed. Both common and latin names are given in the species descriptions, which I personally find to be very beneficial. I found the overall format of the book to be very well done. I feel that any one living in nearby areas can be benefited by this book but, for someone living in West Virginia, this book is the definitive work on butterflies. True, there are other books that contain more, in-depth reference information, but none that exceeds it as a useful field guide. This is the book I have been waiting years to see!

Carnivorous Plants of Australia
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Western Australia Pr (February, 1999)
Author: Allen Lowrie
Average review score:

The 2nd of a Great Series of 3 CP Books!
This is the 2nd book of a series of 3 that describe in details the complete range of Carnivorous/Insectivorous Plants in Australia. In the same format as the other two books, each species is described in one page of text giving a brief botanical description and any significant charactristics. A fairly decent line drawing faces this page of a typical full grown plant shwing the leaf, flower, and root form in detail as required. There are also a number of full colour photographs of each species in the wild showing plants in flower, etc.

A good book, one of the better CP ones (see my Review of Vol. 3 as well). Buy the book if you can - if not try and have a look at a copy and see what you are missing......

Great (3rd) Book on Australia's Carnivorous Plants
This is the long awaited third book in a series that documents the complete range of Australia's Carnivorous/Insectivorous Plants. Like the two before it, the book combines short (single page) semi-botanical descriptions of each species with a high quality sketch illustrating the form and a number of colour photographs showing typical (and sometimes atypical) plants in their natural environment.

This book is not so aimed at the 'how to grow them' shelf, but, at the accurate identification of numerous Australian Drosera (sundews), etc. In this respect it is a 5* hit and a must for any CP grower. Add it to your collection NOW before the print run is sold out (I pre-ordered last year!) - Vol.s 1 and 2 are now hard to get hold of and sell at a premium and a re-print may not occur for a long time.

ONE OF THE BETTER CP BOOKS
